Charlotte is a teenager. She told her doctor: "I have asthma but I only use my inhaler occasionally." Controller medication for asthma patients should be taken regularly, as prescribed, to manage the disease and prevent symptoms, so the doctor thought it might not be a case of asthma. She suspected Charlotte had been misdiagnosed.

To be sure, the doctor decided to check Charlotte's FeNO level. Her score was 5 ppb, which is in the normal range. The doctor also asked Charlotte about any symptoms and, using all this information, she could see she didn't have asthma.

Eventually, they worked out that Charlotte actually had disordered breathing. The doctor taught Charlotte how to fully use her lungs when breathing to make her more comfortable. She then removed the asthma diagnosis. Taking a FeNO test had been useful because it told Charlotte and her doctor that her airways were probably healthy, ruling asthma out and allowing them to look at other causes of her discomfort.
